Iran can play key role in regional peace: FM

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Monday that the Iran has repeatedly proved its major role to establish regional stability and security.

He made the remarks while addressing the 18th international conference on Persian Gulf. A number of scholars from European, Asian and African states as well as the US are attending the two-day conference which is being held at the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) in Tehran.

He reiterated that the Persian Gulf is in dire need of endemic security and that an imported security is meaningless. "None of us can provide its security solely. We should not repeat the past experience," he said.

Mottaki reiterated that the regional states, due to their common religious and social views, have the readiness to shoulder the responsibility of establishing stability and security in their own region without the help of any foreign country.

"Iran considers regional cooperation and convergence as a priority to its foreign policy," he added. Mottaki said that regional cooperation would not violate the rights of any country in the Persian Gulf region.

Briefing the audience on the latest developments over Iran's nuclear program, he said Iran welcomes the interest of member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council to produce nuclear energy. He voiced Iran's readiness to share experience with the regional states in the area of nuclear technology.
