German FM, Palestinian PM to discuss Mideast peace

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter and the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority Salam Fayad will meet tomorrow in Berlin where they will hold talks on the latest developments in the Middle East peace process, an official said yesterday.

German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger told journalists that the meeting will also focus on accelerating efforts to improve "the living conditions of Palestinians." The German-Palestinian talks will take place amid the latest urgent appeal by the European Union Commissioner for foreign policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner who made an urgent appeal to the Israeli regime to lift its cruel blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Ferrero-Waldner stressed that if Mideast peace talks were to have any chance to succeed, the overall living conditions of Palestinians had to be improved.

"Something must happen for people to believe in this (peace) process," she said.

Ferrero-Waldner called for boosting economic aid for the Palestinian-run territories.

Israel has killed scores of Palestinian youth, women and children in consecutive air and ground offensives and indiscriminate bombardment of the residential areas over the past two weeks.

Doctors say Israel used cluster bombs because all the 50 wounded admitted to Shifa Hospital on January 16 have lost limbs.

Gaza's main power station has stopped operation due to fuel shortage as a result of the economic blockade Israel imposed on Gaza Strip.

He said that people do not have electricity light and fuel for heating their homes in the freezing temperature overnight.

Schools do not have fuel for heating and they use candles for light in the almost dark days of the winter.

United Nations Relief and Works Agency echoed the human tragedy perpetrated by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Christopher Gunness, spokesman for UNRWA acknowledged Israeli crimes against civilians living in the Gaza Strip and the humanitarian crisis caused by economic blockade of Gaza.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern about human tragedy in Gaza Strip over the past weeks, condemning Israeli disproportionate use of force against the youth, children and women living in Gaza Strip.
